CAT Score vs CAT Percentile: Key Differences and How They Impact MBA Admissions

A Guide for MBA Candidates on the Distinction Between CAT Score and Percentile
Candidates aiming to get into prestigious B-schools must comprehend the distinction between CAT score and percentile. To provide a clear grasp of how these ideas affect MBA admissions, let’s dissect them.

CAT Score vs. CAT Percentile

  • One of India’s most competitive MBA entry tests is the Common Admission Test (CAT). Candidates frequently come across words like CAT score and CAT percentile while preparing. Although they have different functions, both are crucial for assessing performance and admission prospects at prestigious B-schools.
  • CAT Score: Reflects your raw performance in the exam.
  • CAT Percentile: Indicates your relative position among all test-takers.

Concentrate on raising your score to reach a high percentile in order to increase your chances of admission.

What is CAT Score?

The raw score you receive from the number of right and wrong answers is known as your CAT score. This marking scheme is used in the CAT score system:
• Right Response: +3 points
• MCQs with incorrect answers: -1 point
• For non-MCQs, there is no negative marking.

There are three components on the CAT exam:
1. Reading comprehension and verbal ability (VARC)
2. Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation (DILR)
3. QA, or quantitative aptitude

The aggregate of the scores from the three sections makes up the overall CAT score. Each section has a unique score.

What is CAT Percentile?

A relative score called the CAT percentile compares your performance to that of other applicants. A score in the 99th percentile, for instance, indicates that you outperformed 99% of test takers. This statistic is used by top B-schools to shortlist applicants for further rounds, including the Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD), and Personal Interview (PI).

What is a Scaled CAT Score?

The scores are scaled to ensure fairness because the CAT is administered over several sessions using various test materials. This normalizing procedure accounts for minor differences in session difficulty. For the purpose of shortlisting, the scores are transformed into percentiles following normalization.

CAT 2024 Scaled Score Calculation

The scaled score for CAT 2024, which will be administered in three sessions, will be determined by IIM using the following procedures:
1. Morning Hours: 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.
2. In the afternoon, from 12:30 to 2:30

3. Evening Hour: 4:30–6:30 p.m.
The total of the scaled scores from the three sections is the overall scaled score.

The scaled score, normalized across sessions and articles, serves as the basis for the percentile score. It shows your position in relation to other applicants, not your final result. IIM Calcutta will calculate percentiles using the following technique.
